Chapter Eleven

Boone

Blonde Ambition

After being marched off the Sunday Silence, I’m still on the verge of erupting. But Andi’s right. If I want to learn anything, I need to keep my cool and play this all close to my vest. I can’t put these people on the defense if I expect to get answers. Something happened on this island and someone here knows something about it.

I’m so tempted to abandon the wedding party for a second time that I can taste it. I crave information, and the source is probably right here in the inn. I lived somewhere near here when I was a little boy, that much I’m certain of. The Sunday was my father’s boat, and the Silence was added later, after my mother sold it, maybe? There’s got to be a bill of sale, I would assume. I’d love to get my hands on it, but there’s a wedding going on around me, and two of my favorite people gave me an important role to play.

Connor and Delilah both mean too much to me to dick around with their special day. The Campbells have been my family for two and a half decades, for fuck’s sake. I can wait a couple of days more to find out more about the other one.

As we enter the inn, I’m struck by one outrageous truth. Andi was right the night we broke in LuAnn’s couch, when she said luck didn’t bring me to her. Fate does steer us places at certain times for unfathomable reasons. Andi was sent on a mission to find the perfect place for a secret wedding. And she found Hennessey Cove. Connor and Delilah then chose this place above the other four options she passed along. They all played a role in getting me here, and against all odds, I’m standing on land I once fished on, before my memory faded to black and my tongue refused to work like it used to. I will find out what happened here. And I’ll do that by keeping my wits about me and my eyes wide open.

Mary Jane leads me down the hall to my room, rubbing my back and chattering about home remedies and how her nana always told her to starve a fever and feed a cold. My mouth is dry and my palms are sweaty, but adrenaline still courses through my veins, and I feel like all of my senses are heightened. When Mary Jane wedges her tight little body against me, other responses happen that are also purely biological. I shift away from her, using the wall to support myself.

“I wish you’d let me help you, Boone.” Her breathy confession forces me to look her way.

She’s demure under her long lashes, eyes welcoming as she holds out her hand to me. I take her hand but keep my distance, unwilling to submit to my baser urges and complicate things further.

“Sick,” I tell her, placing a hand on my stomach.

I leave off the tired part, but that’s what I am.
